I ate far too much chocolate yesterday couldn't sleep a wink last night aso I watched both the Adam Friendlander video - which made me cry and filled with anger at our lazy, self-serving representatives - and scrolled through far too many complaints about $55k gate, which mostly annoyed me. Then I watched Chinatown, which ended as the sun rose. That movie is a classic, but maybe not the best way to start the day (IFYK). Had a cig and coffee on the roof after. Magnificent sunrise.
ANYWAY. Obviously $55k is not much, but what are people expecting from a podcaster? Yes I do think one should be paid higher for an intense and demanding entry level position, but people are acting like they don't know the playing field at all... that salary is pretty normal for that world, no? I made far, far less my first years in NYC which wasn't THAT long ago. IDK. You make it work and you move on up... I feel very torn between agreeing that the standard is too low and it's very, very wrong, but also feeling that everyone is acting like big babies and bullying someone online because they're angry at the larger injustice that is trying to scrape by in NYC/any major city right now. IDK. It's definitely not enough money but the mob was way too quick on her and it did disturb me...
Happy to hear young people are realizing that smoking an external hard drive looks ugly and stupid.
I’m extremely envious of the way you write after pulling an all nighter. Maybe I’d be different if I had a roof to smoke on.
I somewhat agree with you on TCRF. My first job out of college in 2016 for Nymag, I made 50k/year. I had health insurance though. I think people lose control of job descriptions (and all things) once they enter the world of TikTok and an unpredictable algorithm. There’s a lesson in there.
I almost feel like she shouldn't have posted the job on TT. Post it on the Feed Me job board among others and those who want to apply will. I see both sides, but I agree with you. I'm on the job hunt and I bitch to my friends (as early as this morning) about some of the salaries I'm seeing, but then it's up to me to decide what to do and obviously if there is room for negotiation one should.
The main thing that kills me about TCRF is that 55K is below the threshold for non-exempt employees in NYC - regardless of employer size. There's no way that's a 40 hr a week job. Seems like it would cost her way more either way - it's shocking she has a dedicated HR person who didn't flag this. I understand it's common practice in fashion but Vogue et al have access to a different caliber of legal counsel than a podcast does...
I was so mad about Recho I almost canceled my $6 a month for the cutting room floor. I know it’s a podcast but she comes from Fashion and for some reason they are the only industry that feels like you should not be paid accurately for your work and if you are paid for that work you must wait a minimum of 30 days. I thought she would know better and want to do better. 55k a year was so disrespectful to every New Yorker. There is no way possible she could have been deadass serious with that shit.
Same! I also saw another TikTok explaining how $40-$60k is a normalized salary these days and I couldn’t agree more. I look at job opportunities daily and in nonprofits, fashion, beauty, theater, tv/media, film and sometimes social media - that salary is not uncommon at all, it’s actually the majority. And the roles aren’t entry level! Makes me so sad that she couldn’t recognize and offer more considering how rent has basically doubled post-COVID.
I don’t really understand this logic tbh? If “that salary is not uncommon at all, it’s actually the majority” - then why are we singling out and dragging this one person? Why are people not as mad about the hundreds of corporations posting these $40-60K salaries, and instead destroying an individual creator trying to grow a tiny independent business without any external funding? This is a fundamental socioeconomic misalignment issue - a deep rooted problem that is not newly normalized “these days,” it was far more normalized 15 years ago with entirely unpaid internships and $30K entry level salaries and nyc postgrads splitting 1 bedroom apartments between 3 people. We can (and should) be mad about that, but I don’t think it’s appropriate to take out all this anger on one small business owner who is trying to make things work. There are other issues with the job posting that are problematic (multiple roles, legality) but the salary range is a systemic issue, so we can’t place blame on one individual. A few years ago, nobody would even know what the salary was - it was only very recently that new laws made that information public in hopes of discouraging unfair salaries. It allows people to make informed decisions about what salary is acceptable to them. That’s the type of change that’s helpful - but the point isn’t to punish individuals for the system.
I did a ride along as part of a Jschool assignment in fort Greene Brooklyn in 1998. It was probably one of the most eventful nights of my whole year — first stop was when Susan Sarandon had accidentally crashed into a school bus. I’m pretty sure I ended up selling a tid bit about that to the intelligencer….Next stop a crack bust in the projects where I got to wear a bullet proof vest and witness everything unfold first hand— I remember a few more interesting/ crazy stops along the night…there was a foot pursuit I wasn’t allowed to go on so I just stayed seated silently in the back of the cop car….Most memorable part of the night was actually when I entered the precinct to meet my “ride along” cops they both looked like a couple of Ralph Lauren models. I thought I was getting pranked. I was like — I’m riding with YOU guys?!?
Anyway I’m not sure if the Jschool still does “ride alongs” but it’s really a fun reporting assignment.
Here to second Ina’s advice, not that she needs my endorsement. Ever since becoming parents, my partner and I have been hosting 5pm dinners so that people will children can attend… and because it’s earlier AND because there are children, the vibe is so much more casual, people show up in their “house clothes” and it is lighthearted and fun. I mean, you can’t not have a good time if goldfish are one of the appetiser options. My most favorite party we’ve ever hosted was a NYE bash that started at 4, included a ball drop and confetti at 7 and hosts in bed by 9pm. Our friends who don’t have children still talk about it. 😂
My favorite item today? Putting your price out there. Most ‘Stacks just have a subscribe button so you have no idea of cost. Nearly as annoying as menus without prices in listings.
I really hate clutches. I got a Neiti from Polene and had a cobbler remove the inner wallet (who carries 6 cards???). Phone, lipstick and room for sunglasses. It’s my dream.
The Adam Friedland show feels like the natural evolution of the dying late night talk show format (which is mainly just viewed via youtube and social media clips now anyway)
Eugene Remm is a talented guy. I had every reason to be negatively biased against him - but he opened up my little finance/numbers brain to appreciate creative people. And he was so blatantly honest about not being a numbers person, that I couldn't help but grow to love him.

Bingo! What a ridicules job description. Learn to edit ppl. Employers need to have a real think about needs vs wants.

Dunno how helpful this is to the larger group, but you can also get a (very strong) Honey Deuce at NYAC 😵💫
Refreshing after a naked swim I’m sure
Aquatic center is closed for maintenance, so I can’t report back on that 🤷🏼♀️
Haha, I realize the days of nude swimming at NYAC are gone but kinda outrageous it lasted as long as it did

I think every company should have to pay entry level salary based on what Forbes says is required to live comfortably in that city.
Would love that. Did Forbes give a number?
136k according to Forbes so Miss Mamas better look to hire back in Illinois
Yep sounds about right

I’m happy to help anyone find a wedding appropriate clutch on eBay 🤲

I try not to hit people over the head with it, but on a free letter I think it’s nice to give some context to people
First, we have the Austin-based hospitality group taking over Nine Orchard, and now we won't have our watermelon slushies. What a world.
Next thing you know, Hillstone is going to buy Kikis
Nothing would surprise me. We may be one spinach and artichoke dip away from a suburban strip mall.
LOVE Bella Freud’s podcast. One of the few I listen to and it’s even gorgeous to watch on YouTube. Her voice is so soothing.
It also makes for a reallllly special live event if she ever expands in that direction
🎯 would buy tickets to that!

I wanna hear more about your thoughts on bad food writing!
Okay, which part?
what do you think is terrible and what do you think should improve?
clinically addicted to Audrey Hobert's album thank you for interviewing her
You’re welcome ❤️

Who has had a meal at The Corner Store? Is it really that good? I've tried to go twice. No luck, but I'm just not convinced it will actually be good.
