Edward Yang supremacy! Yi Yi is so beautifully shot. Mahjong and Brighter Summer Day also worth the length.
My biggest omission is Nuri Bilge Ceylan films, he's Turkish so does not get as much notoriety here but Once Upon A Time in Anatolia, Winter Sleep, and About Dry Grasses have really interesting stories that to me rival a Wong Kar-wai/Yang/Ho/PTA storyline and cinematography
Once Upon A Time in Anatolia, it has Yılmaz Erdoğan who is a very popular in Turkey and a sort of twisting storyline that Ceylan does well. It’s very brooding and beautiful scenery.
Thanks Teddy! In my house, one of my key responsibilities is to try to have quality entertainment available at all times. Your list was very helpful to me. Have you seen the movie "Sovereign?" We saw it last night and liked it a lot. Strong cast, tight story.
I have a dubbing question for you. A friend in the movie business told me that AI is improving dubbing by leaps and bounds so that eventually dubbed versions will be far better than they are now, i.e., actually watchable.
Have you heard anything about that/do you have an opinion?
Yes, the dubbing has gotten a lot better with AI. They can make the voice sound like the original actor, just speaking in the new language. And they can also change the mouth movements to match too. It's pretty cool stuff. Here's an example:
The end scene/credits to Michael Clayton is one of my favorites ever! Also it’s not gonna be on anyone’s “best ever” but want to show some love to Drive personally as one of my favorite movies from the last ~20 years- just a perfectly shot, colorful and stylish, simple and concise, entertaining movie with an all time soundtrack and cast. One of my most rewatched movies, seeing it in a theater as a college kid was amazing.
One day aspire to get in a cab and say "Just give me $50's worth".
Drive would've made it on my list if I'd rewatched it more recently. Great film but it's been meme'd so much I think people take it less seriously now than it deserves.
The Criterion Miami Neonior list is impeccable. I am among the cult of people who are obsessed with Miami Vice (just love Michael Mann in general). It’s part camp machismo, part meditative art film, pure Michael Mann. Like David Lynch, I think you have to get (and enjoy) Mann’s cinematic language to really enjoy it.
Also Out of Sight is HOT in a way movies just don’t seem to be anymore. The sexual tension between J.Lo and Clooney is beautiful. Ugh… gorgeously cool film.
Teddy’s Top 10 choices rock. Mother is the superior Boon Jong Ho film! It’s been nice to see appreciation for Children of Men grow in the last two decades. It landed with what seemed like a thud when it came out, and I felt like the only person I knew who saw it and loved it… They should release it next year for the 20th anniversary.
Also Birth and Spring Breakers should really be on that NYT list...
I'm a huge Michael Mann fan, Thief is probably on my Top 10 all-time. I'm with you on Miami Vice and I even like Blackhat lol. His digital cinematography is so beautiful and ahead of its time.
TBPN rizz can’t be replicated, loved their latest 8sleep commercial like they make ads feel fun. Meanwhile can’t stop thinking the information one being TIT TV
This newsletter has reignited my pipe dream of starting a newsletter where I watch and review all the classic rom coms I was too snobby/busy/distracted to watch. Pls talk me out of it.
I was surprised Parasite was NYT's #1, considering it was (for me) one of those movies I'm glad I watched, but won't ever return to. I feel like the #1 would be a classic that you'd want to rewatch.. but I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes horror/thriller/gore, so I guess I can't argue here. Spider-Man was definitely left out, you're so right!! Loved this read.
Love this list! Love the inclusion of The Nice Guys, I just watched it last summer and was surprised I hadn't heard more buzz about it before. Hilarious
Hearst Castle isn't 'considered' a National Park: it is a State Park. I'm unsure why a jet setter would think that Hearst Castle was still being run like a private home, or a resort, but then I'm not a jet setter, and bought tickets like a plebe for a tour. That's why they can charge a huge amount of money to swim in the pool, because you can't do that on a tour. Btw, you need to pay $500 a year to be a member in order to spend $1000 to swim in the pool. That's a unique gift idea for the person who has everything, imo.
Teddy you are wild for going with a full top 100 list. Pretty easy to get to top 25 but 100 ... whew that's a lot. Where's Christian Petzold's Transit, though? That movie rules. My small list had me ruminating on whether Martin McDonagh and his brother John are good filmmakers because sometimes they are sublime (I think Calvary is crazy underrated and amazing) and sometimes they are Tarantino imitator pastiche — but usually their work is good if Brendan Gleeson is in it!

Haven't seen any of Ceylan's films but they're on my list. Which one should I start with?
I loved Brighter Summer Day and Taipei Story too
Once Upon A Time in Anatolia, it has Yılmaz Erdoğan who is a very popular in Turkey and a sort of twisting storyline that Ceylan does well. It’s very brooding and beautiful scenery.
Thanks, I'll check it out. Love the Metropolitan profpic by the way
Thanks, I appreciate what you do online

Wow. That's impressive. The new tech should increase global audiences for films.
teddy’s top 100 list rocks !! i had knives out, good time, jennifer’s body, and about time on my list of movies that should’ve been included as well
He's the best. Alix, I love your music!!!
About Time!!! Ah so good.
Miami Blues is such an amazing unhinged movie. Along with Red October - def my favorite early Baldwin performance.
Red October is fantastic. Hall of Fame dad movie
One of My dads fav movies . Always on growing up.
I need to watch Red October next
Children of Men and Red October are the two best movies of all time. Facts.
The best Clancy film - and Connery’s best performance outside of Bond. James Earl Jones and Sam Neill are great also.

Their ads are unbeatable, make me question how valuable creative agencies are for people like them (and us lol)

Can we get Teddy Kim’s top 5 tv shows and top 5 comedies? More Teddy, plz.
I should do a TV list. As for comedy...

- Annie Hall
- Forgetting Sarah Marshall
- Midnight in Paris
- When Harry Met Sally
- White Men Can't Jump
- My Night at Maud's
- Metropolitan
- The Nice Guys
- Paris When It Sizzles
Love this list! Love the inclusion of The Nice Guys, I just watched it last summer and was surprised I hadn't heard more buzz about it before. Hilarious
Yes we love teddy!!!!

How to blow up a pipeline — one of the most thrilling movies ever!

Have to admit I'm not a big Petzold fan but I haven't seen Transit yet.
Calvary is great although I haven't seen it in a while. I remember liking Seven Psychopaths too
I often dream about Mary’s Marvelous scones 😍 must check out those recipes, thank you!
hopefully the milkmaid dress can bridge the political divide. love a little barn role play
Alec Baldwin is so hot in Miami Blues omggggggg
