"Having people broadly be empowered is an equalizing force and a democratizing force and it takes power away from incumbents and means that anyone gets to express themselves or contribute ideas to the world."

That's cute, Mark. Whose work is stolen to train the models and whose work benefits as a result? Who gets rich on the AI boom and who is put out of work? Who gets to enjoy this power and who gets to live next to the data centers? My wish is for extractive tech billionaires to have a minimum amount of integrity and candor about what they're doing. Don't treat people like idiots.

I'm going to go ahead and pretend the interview doesn't exist because…that guy. However, the sandwich of Cannes updates and a stellar water cooler today are tops!

Emily Sundberg's avatar

Glad you like them I’ll keep them coming

Every time someone I admire asks this guy a question, I am optimistic that maybe there is hope for us all and for him. But alas, I continue to dislike this guy — now even more than I thought possible the last time we heard from him. Thanks for the vibe check!

Just saw a report from NYT on Meta getting into the prediction market space (internally called “Arena,” but would be independent of Facebook and Instagram) One of the first non-sports betting app branded versions I’ve seen that can actually compete. (No other operator is even close to Kals or PM, I’ve seen the damages)

Wait I also did that UGA study abroad program in college and it landed me my first job post-grad lol (go Dawgs)

No way!! Did you come to Cannes

Madeline Hill's avatar

I did then, but not this year!

I would have liked to know why he is gagging whistleblowing former employees from speaking at book festivals, or whether he is going to improve his platforms so that governments don’t have to ban children from accessing them, or why he wears watches costing hundreds of thousands of dollars while he fires his employees, or feels that it’s ok to track his employees’ screens, or whether he can sleep at night from all the CO2 emissions his data centres are churning out, possibly unnecessarily… instead he picked (!) questions and got to answer one of them “chicken tenders”. Sorry to be a party pooper.

"In most cases, the companies people build will be the main way they make an impact in the world."

Indeed, Mark. Indeed.

Riiight? So telling. He's gross. But we knew that.

“I actually think the idea that you make money with a company and then find a way to do good with a philanthropy is a really outdated way of thinking about things. In most cases, the companies people build will be the main way they make an impact in the world.” Wow

Emily, you are meeting and talking with such a diverse set of cultural leaders at Cannes. I think it's time for you to be interviewed by us.

My question would be what new insights are you coming back with about AI's effect on the advertising and marketing industry. Who are the predicted winners, losers, and those who will be largely unaffected?

And whatever one thinks about Meta, getting MZ as an interviewee is a coup.

Thanks for answering! I am going to say that I interviewed Mark Zuckerberg now. Great Guest Lecture. Mark always has interesting thoughts.

Do you guys think being a billionaire makes things less humiliating, like sitting on a booster seat than if you were not a billionaire, or is it the same amount of humiliation?
