This morning, Rachel Karten's newsletter spoke to the Bilt team's Roomiesroomiesroomies Tik Tok series which does little to nothing to talk about Bilt (an app for paying rent I guess?) and from their perspective it was "insert every talking point about customer connection and reaching people where they are" amazing. Hinge doing something similar with Substack fits that model. I'll be curious to touch base with these brands in 6 months to see if this strategy worked at actually selling the product.

Daughter of Michigan wedding DJ parents here. Can unfortunately confirm the cake face smash is nothing new. Was happening heavily in the 90s.

Oh I didn’t think it was new, I’m just sure social media has created an uptick in these moments for the camera

Now that I think about it, your point makes me realize that the face cakes of the 90s coincided with the rise of the wedding videographer.

The article is kind of disturbing if you read it. It’s a little beyond the standard cake smash of yore, I think the intensity/violence of it is the “rot” part

I read the gross cake smashing article. And I'm starting to think that The Cut is making up many of these stories or at least embellishing them. No way to verify that any of this is really happening.

But this really happened:

My son Andrew was at a wedding and the server carried out the wedding cake and dropped it. The manager came out and started berating the poor server. Everyone felt awful for about 30 seconds until the whole waitstaff broke out into an elaborate song and dance number. it was a complete surprise to everyone but I think the bride and the bride's mother. Followed by the real cake. Genius.

That is a lot of drama for a wedding, but I think I would love it at someone else's wedding. Just not mine :D

Someone once described The Cut's Sex Diaries as "primarily an outlet for sweaty male creative writing MFAs" and I've never been able to unsee it.

I have a ton of friends who love Odli but hadn’t thought about them in a while. Looks like they’ve taken a big swing in terms of inventory types. I really thought of them as being custom name tees and tanks so was surprised to see they’ve got swim now

The Oddli/Role Model bandana is a satin-y material and it is adorable. Best concert merch I’ve seen in a long while.

The bandana is such a great item. I always have a blue or red one in my back pocket. So many possible uses—handkerchief, napkin, direct pressure in first aid situation, emergency sling, dust cloth, napkin. Somewhat hard these days to find 100 percent cotton, not-made-in-China ones.

Wish I could remember…maybe a random army-navy surplus store in “Downtown Crossing” which these days is like the Boston equivalent of Canal Street? Sometimes the true-value hardware store has them near the checkout counter? Then put them in the back pocket of the J Press suit or Bill’s or Buck Mason khakis? High/low….

I wear a lot of cotton bandanas for hiking & golfing and love these https://handkerbandanas.com/ Hermes also has a cotton 80 that has a great print on it as well if you are feeling splurgy.

the Hermes cotton ones don’t hold their value the same way the silk do. you can sometimes get great prices on secondhand ones if you’re willing to hunt. I got a set of 4 in great condition for less than half the value of a silk one

I definitely have a search saved on vestaire and TRR for the cotton ones! I did break down and buy the bord a bord 80 at the store just because it was so lovely and I didn’t want to wait for the resell lottery. I also see why they don’t hold their value because I absolutely am beating mine up but it’s getting a ton of use.

Your back pocket? Are you in a gang?

Expand full comment
Ira Stoll's avatar

It's not visible. It's inside the pocket, folded up. Where else would I carry it? I'm not going to make like Secretary Hegseth and the American flag pocket square. I am not in a gang but was a Boy Scout where you learn about using a handkerchief for first aid or as a potholder in a campfire type situation. Boy Scout is like a gang but with law-abiding community service instead of violent crime.
