Hi everyone, I’m back in New York!
NEWS:
Are 70’s-themed bars just Ohio-themed? I discovered an awesome new Substack (
) through another great Substack (). Alex’s Substack is inspired by a New Yorker column called Bar Tab that was discontinued in 2018. I really liked how he describes the NYC bar scene, which is currently overrun with “70s-inspired” bars. Alex’s writing gives me the pang of frustration that I would be better off admitting is jealousy. He really captures everything wrong with New York hospitality (reservable conversation pits, corny phone booth props aren’t functioning, vacant dance floors).
“Think of what that designation means to you and picture a bar. Is it one of these: Birdy’s, Ray’s, Ray’s 2, The Flower Shop, Twin’s, Carmelo’s, Goldie’s, Pony Boy, Coyote Club, Three Diamond Door, Do or Dive, JoyFace, The Johnson’s, etc? Are these really 70’s themed or is it that they look like you’re in Ohio? Or more accurately in the Ohio of my mind’s eye. Have the pandemic billboards advertising Ohio reached into our subconscious and incepted us? These bars generally shy away from having a television unless it’s a television from the 70’s as is the case at the new Ray’s in Greenpoint.”

Historical rivals Apple and Google might be getting into bed together. Apple is in talks to build Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence engine into the iPhone, setting the stage for a blockbuster agreement that would shake up the AI industry. The two companies already have a lucrative search deal. An AI assistant / AI copilot works best if it has god-tier permissions to your data and other apps, so I’ll keep an eye on this story.
