Good morning everyone. I’m working on my second hospitality report and I’ll try to get it out by the end of the week. Stay tuned :)

  • The owner of Westfield malls said last year that it planned to shed most of its American portfolio by the end of 2023 — but they’ve changed their mind. This is a subject I’m really interested in, as malls not only serve as a laboratory for the current state of retail, but they’re also a core third place for young people. Enclosed malls were hit hard by the pandemic and recovered slowly. Older, low-end malls have plummeted in value, but many of the country’s well-located, high-end centers are now doing well. Major mall operators, including Simon Property Group and Macerich, have reported strong tenant demand this year. Eater did an entire package on malls this year. Amanda Mull just wrote a fantastic essay about faith in American retail. I think I’ll go do some reporting for you guys this fall.

  • This Sporty and Rich homage to Carolyn Bessette and JFK Jr. would be 5% better if they didn’t put the male model in such a shitty suit. Rouje also used the couple as a reference last year.

  • You can’t go anywhere without hearing about Marisa Meltzer’s Glossy, a story about Emily Weiss’s Glossier that actually came out TODAY. What surprises me about this book cycle is that the author is getting as many writing opportunities as her reviewers.

    • Here is it being reviewed by NYT Books, “Throughout Meltzer’s reporting, she’s both fascinated and confounded by Weiss, whom she finds to be aloof, preternaturally put-together and a master of wielding vulnerability to keep an interview on message.”

    • Here is it being reviewed by Washington Post Books.

    • Here is it being reviewed by the LA Times.

    • Meltzer went on Vogue’s podcast to discuss the book.

    • Meltzer wrote a story for Financial Times about where Glossier went wrong.

    • Meltzer also wrote a story for Vanity Fair about the disappearance of girlbosses, where she plugs Weiss as the girlbossiest of them all and links to her book.

I could keep going, you can see what I’m trying to say. Everyone is reading this book. I read this book. I don’t think you want to hear more about this book. But man, does girlboss discourse make for a good headline.
