Seventeen magazine forever. I do what I do today because of Seventeen. I used to read it in the grocery store while my mom was in produce. I wasn’t allowed to buy it so I had to get through all of the pages while she shopped.

Major’s question about how Seventeen thinks about girlhood and identity and how it changes was amazing! I was bummed Willa only answered it with the lists of brands 😔

+1!! Missed the point of the question entirely! And specifically, would have been great to get a glimpse of who a Seventeen reader is today.

Yes, can we petition someone else for their thesis on girlhood instead? Casey Lewis or Caroline O'Donoghue, perhaps?

Claire Marie Healy has great stuff on girlhood in Another magazine

I’ve been grabbing Zines all summer because I missed the feeling magazines use to give me. I think it’s important to feed your creativity with physical things.

Agree; plus reading words on paper is a such a relaxing experience. Its like running outside in the fresh air versus running on a treadmill under nasty fluorescent lights

Yes! This is a great analogy. It’s hard for me to listen to a book if it’s not a memoir read by the person or if it doesn’t have a huge production like Sandman.

That was my guess too. Pleading for her review of Trump candles while she's at it. And he has a skincare line? https://www.trumpstore.com/collections/skincare/

Doomscrolling through product pages. This site reads like a factory catalog. Sad!

I can't think of a better intersection of my interests than Chips and Dip.

My mom wouldn't let me read my cousin's Seventeen magazines when I was 11 because they had "sex advice". My aunt retaliated by buying me a Jane at the airport when I was 14 whoops.

Not sure I agree about Guiduccis comment about “long lead investigation pieces” — why exactly couldn’t that kind of reporting be on substack? Do they help provide legal coverage at all? Would be great to see more smart investigative reporting on here…I can see it happening in the future. Hopefully!!

As someone with lawyers and fact checkers on my team I’d say… totally

I think potentially the economics. Consistent publishing is what converts on Substack (and all digital subscription products — this is why people are obsessed with MAU, WAU, DAU, etc)— you need to be publishing at least weekly to make anything close to enough to support yourself (assuming you’re also publishing things that are relevant, interesting, great quality, etc). Longform investigative journalism is incredibly expensive and takes months and months to do well. It’s just not the right product and business model to offset those costs on the front end for reporters, and give them the time they need to do what a New Yorker or VF correspondent can do.

Little can meet the anticipation of receiving the September issues in the 90s and early aughts. For those of us who lived for the incredible visual rush of seeing those models, stylists, editors and photographers monumental talent with every page turn - nothing has come close since.

The JP Morgan building might by shiny but return to office is the bane of working parents everywhere. In this economy? Maybe 2% of offices are nice and conducive to quality work. 98% are hellscapes with terrible lighting.

Will Mark Zuckerberg join in on this outdoorsman cos play by buying this skims hoodie? He’s such an outdoors man but he can’t name the rods or guns he uses…puke.

Should one feel awkward wearing hardcore camo if they aren’t a hunter or fisher? Or do you think: it’s just a print…whatever, get over it, thinking too deep about the politics of brown/green hues. My friend's daughter hunts – she told me when I wear camo to just tell whoever asks I use a Zoli Z-Bella (sounds so pretty). See, I’m better prepared than Mark Z already.

Just a quick note that Realtree also offers chic comforter sets, frilly window drapes, and a silk robe – all in Camo. The offerings are robust.
