I did my makeup last night:
NEWS:
There has been a big acquisition in the lip category. Consumer health company Haleon (whose brands include Emergen-C, Flonase, and Advil), sold lip balm brand ChapStick to private equity group Yellow Wood Partners (whose brands include Suave, Dr. Scholl’s, and Isle of Paradise) for $430mm as it seeks to simplify its portfolio and pay down debt. “While ChapStick is a great brand, much loved by consumers around the world, it is not a core focus for Haleon,” said the company’s chief executive Brian McNamara. It’s a good time to be in the business of lip products. Last week, Business of Fashion reported that sales of lip gloss in the US reached $508mm in 2022, up from $406mm a year prior. Even within the wider category of prestige makeup, lip is the fastest-growing overall beauty category. Lip oils, balms and gloss have the most momentum, all growing at a faster rate than lipstick. “ChapStick products are purchased by one out of every five households in the United States,” said Yellow Wood partner Dana Schmaltz, adding that the group would increase consumer marketing investments in the brand, and take “a more focused sales approach”. If I had to guess… ChapStick will probably update their packaging and launch more products in the gloss category. Their Instagram is funny, I expect that to change too.
Dave Portnoy didn’t know the name of one of his own podcasts. In the video, he learns that podcast “Plan Bri” is actually a spin on “Plan B”… like the emergency contraception. For years, he thought it was an abbreviation for “Plane Bri.” Reminder, if anyone can give me an introduction to this man, I will thank you in ways you can’t imagine.
