The sun is finally out in New York. Today I will run around for client meetings and then search the farmer’s market for some squash but I also want to ferment some hot sauce with the last summer peppers. Then I have school tonight and then I will watch the debate. Then I will scroll on hotel websites and debate taking a trip to Rome this fall.
In other news:
Hermes is launching 6 eyeshadow palettes, 6 mascaras and several beauty tools on October 15. I adore the Hermes lipstick. If you haven’t touched the packaging, go find a tube and touch it. There’s a tiny magnet in it and it makes you feel RICH. They always reminded me of the Dimes pepper mills... Since launching with lipstick in 2020, Hermès has released new offerings each year—nail polish, then blush and, in 2022, a series of complexion-focused products called Plein Air. Hermès can now compete with other luxury beauty brands across all categories. Growth in beauty has helped lift the brand to record revenues, including over 20% growth in 2022 and the first half of 2023.
In fact this past year, pumpkin-flavored products accounted for $787 million in national sales. While Americans have bought fewer pumpkin products over the last two years, Bloomberg Second Measure reports that, this year, Starbucks’ sales increased by more than 7 percent during the week of the P.S.L.’s eyebrow-raising Aug. 24 debut. I kind of want to order a bunch of these and add vodka and make pumpkin spice espresso martinis.
Are you all aware that there are people who have been stranded on Block Island for four days? A friend on the island texted me last night that “there were at least two weddings this weekend here.” Which means if you thought you were going to have a quick two-night trip for a college friend’s wedding, you’re now stuck on a tiny island with all those guests for going on day 5. Service on the Block Island Ferry was canceled Tuesday for the fourth day in a row due to high surf and strong winds. All traditional and high-speed ferry departures were canceled because "sea conditions have not improved" for the company's vessels to exit. What about flying? you ask. My island source said “I saw one plane today but we called and it was $850 a seat for a 20 minute flight.”
A lot of VC firms try to do content, and most of them (in my opinion) fail. Former Morning Brew editor and Business Insider journalist Maya Kosoff and Eliza Carter started a content consulting firm specifically for VC firms, startups and financial orgs. Cool.
