I have absolutely loved J Lee’s recent reviews. Painting a picture and putting me in a seat. I haven’t seen food writing like this in a long long while. Well done!
Wow my man J Lee- cool reading this because like a month ago I had been listening to Glamour Profession by Steely Dan too much and decided it was time to make my first trip up to the legendary Mr Chow Midtown and your review basically mirrors what I thought then, but written better than I ever would. Love that place. Instant classic today.
Mr. Chow, the man, myth, and legend, lives in my neighborhood and makes having coffee at (LA) Tartine look like the most charming and extraordinary thing you could be doing that day.
Candidate for Best Thai Restaurant in New York: Dagg, at 10 East 39th in Midtown: https://daggthainyc.com/ (I'm biased, it's across the street from my building and I eat there all the time - they make excellent Vespers). Strong social media game: https://www.instagram.com/dagg.nyc
J Lee have you ever read AA Gill? Bc your writing makes me as excited as some of his work which I just couldn’t get enough of!! AA Gill was the best. these days Tina brown and sometimes Maureen Dowd they write things that take it to a new level and freeze me in place so I have to finish it. It’s the kind of writing that makes you talk back to your screen! That’s like your writing! You need to put together a little book of your reviews bc they are so good. Wesley morris does this for me in the podcast world. Some people are artists in their discipline and that is you. Thank you JLee!

We’re breaking down the walls of midtown one block at a time
I love the decidedly non-TikTok/IG venue selections unearthed from the Midtown Crypt as of late. J Lee on a roll
Need to call you with bathhouse intel for the next WC edition

"For nearly 50 years Mr Chow has been a place that you can go to be SOMEWHERE and to be SOMEONE."
Great line and that was the vibe at the old Four Seasons.
Sticker of Shame is striking fear into me, so I guess it’s effective. Also, voting for the event being on Shelter Island.
Would you come
I’d be there!
