This was my weekend at the new restaurant from the Cafe Spaghetti people, Swoony’s.
SKIMS is the official underwear of the NBA and WNBA. The deal follows the debut of the brand’s first menswear line last week. The three-year pact includes the WNBA and USA Basketball. In addition, the NBA is taking an equity stake in SKIMS. We really need to see Kim’s VC make some moves soon.
Kardashian Studios dropped two commercials on Friday. One was for the new SKIMS nipple bra (I emailed the team after the video launched, they confirmed it was real). The gist is instantly recognizable — hot woman returns to office x corporate Marriott conference room presentation x the staff of Sterling Cooper having sex with everyone on the desk x the specific feeling every woman has when her nipples get hard and show through a shirt. The commercial is great, and we don’t always see Kim being this playful. I also have always said that I like when startups INVENT NEW THINGS — that’s what this is, a totally new product to the market. Will I wear it? Probably not, I barely wear a bra already. But I think it’s fun that she’s bringing the #freethenipple trend to people who would like to participate without gravity getting in the way — it’s a lot cheaper than a boob job. (*Edit, a reader brought to my attention that about ten years ago, VS had a nipple bra)
Next, we got Kylie’s weird commercial for Khy, her new fake leather brand. I’ve been trying to find who directed it because it’s pretty unusual and camp for Kylie. The top comment is “This campaign makes zero sense, the vibe doesn’t match the clothes 🥴” and the following comments defend the video, in a yOU jUsT DonT Get IT tone. There are a few jokes in it… a croissant the size of a watermelon, Kylie mindlessly touching everything in a palatial ballroom, Kylie taking on a new identity while living in Paris like a normal person. More than the products being sold, I’m interested in the team of creative directors and cinematographers the Kardashians are building around themselves, and the types of stories they’re trying to tell on Instagram through videos.
