Peter Attia's name appears over a thousand times in the Epstein files... not "several"

David Roberts's avatar

I wrote a post on Epstein and dug deep on the Attia story. The worst of it was that he was visiting Epstein in NYC when he got a call from his wife that their baby was in cardiac distress on the way to the ER. He decided to stay to see Epstein rather than going back home. it was not a casual friendship.

That said, Attia's behavior does not change his health advice.

Updated that language with a correction.

“Too much water is poison” and “arsenic is natural” are such TikTok comment section arguments. And using AI to gain back trust?

Fun fact: the Maillard reaction is also how self tanners work! The active ingredient DHA is a sugar molecule that reacts with amino acids (proteins) in our top layer of skin cells resulting in brown pigments

I am 31 and have gone through dozens of bottle of jergens in my lifetime and just learned this today

Jolie De Feis's avatar

What’s your jergens of choice?

Herb's avatar

I'm curious what Rahal considers "Good use of AI"

Jake's avatar

Does he like to be addressed as Peter David (ala Tim Apple)

Great interview. The below quote is true and wise. Either make sure it's a trusted source our do your own work.

"Content creators have an incentive for negative news even if it’s not true."

Have been to Hoffman -- changed my relationship with my mom significantly. I went before I had my son. A few team members have went as well. Its pretty intense. Sort of like a "vipassana meditation retreat" but for group therapy. 9/10 people I know that went found it transformational. Especially for relationships with parents and children.

Emily Sundberg's avatar

Did it influence how you built Othership at all?

Robbie Bent's avatar

Somewhat -- a lot of the guided journeys we've created were inspired by Hoffman, Vipassana, AA + CA, psychedelic medicine retreats. Some of the guided sessions have Hoffman-esque practices. And the group sharing parts are inspired by a lot of group work I did when I was struggling with drug addiction. Happy to share more if this is an interesting topic. It really helps you learn about your patterns -- for me, hugel people pleasing and anti-confict + wanting my mom to love me through being successful -- so I think an experience like that provides space for inquiry which CAN result in behaviour change. But its also only one week and then you go back into NY with same friends, family, job and sustainable change is hard. Othership classes were meant to be a space for people interested in that kind've emotional inquiry -- so if you went to something like Hoffman, you'd have a place in the city to go to do similar practices

He’s right about content creators and misinformation; wish more people would say it.

That’s a wiiiiiild defense of Peter A

Katy Donahue Wynn's avatar

does that defense really surprise you? feels in line with the overall tone of this.

i think cancel culture was a little overblown, and don’t like this narrative of “if anyone appears in the epstein files, we must cancel them”.

but i think some of these creators/authors/podcasters, which peter attia is one, should recognize that their income, support, lifestyle is funded by members of the public wanting to hear what they have to say. and i’ve read some of the stuff attia says in the epstein files, and am no longer very interested in what he has to say. same with deepak chopra.

Eva Ducruezet's avatar

I'm curious about this. Do you feel that his (disgusting) comments in the Epstein files invalidate his scientific findings somehow? Shouldn't we separate the science from the person?

I know this is a silly analogy, but imagine we found out Thomas Edison was an awful person (some version of what's in the files) - would we then stop using lightbulbs?

Ann's avatar

Very different when you’re relying on someone for personal advice. When you see how they live their lives, you remove their permission to influence yours. The analogy to Edison doesn’t fit.

Katy Donahue Wynn's avatar

precisely. i’m weighing the uniqueness of attia’s insights / what he’s produced (not very unique or truly groundbreaking IMO) against how i feel about him as a person now with this new information in the files. inventing a lightbulb is kind of a different story.

again i think there is a big distinction between making your living speaking to the public - with a popular podcast, book sales, speaking at conferences, etc. vs. something else

yeeeeeeeah. Jeez, to say the least.

I seriously hope the marketing team has reached out to Rachel McAdams for a reactive campaign because another competitor undoubtedly will …

Lilly Drury's avatar

Chomps is already everything David wants to be

Emily Sundberg's avatar

I'm scared of them

Lilly Drury's avatar

I love the turkey ones I genuinely think they taste great. Need to think of it like charcuterie board meats then I think it comes off as less “beef jerky”

Emily Sundberg's avatar

I'll try one for you

baroquebbq's avatar

we are a die hard chomps household

baroquebbq's avatar

we’ll also do the snack mates chicken apple and chicken pizza

baroquebbq's avatar

tbh whichever one isn’t sold out at whole foods, but the turkey slaps

Michelle Blaser's avatar

Chomps are delish and way healthier (than competitors like Slim Jim) and the category is growing like crazy

justin thomas kay's avatar

as someone who has been on board with david since launch i agree completely that the formula shift made a better bar. those early days after the bars sat for a month they turned into bricks (maillard! who knew?). love the product and love his confidence in it.

tragedyplum's avatar

To be honest I kinda preferred the old taste but I’m a freak.

MRAC's avatar

Can’t believe GQ didn’t send Chris Black to Hoffman lol

Emily Sundberg's avatar

They still could….

I love The Wolseley. I ate there when I studied abroad in London, I saved up my grocery money to do it. Emily, when you are in London next, it's worth stopping by if you never have. They are so courtly there, it feels like stepping back in time. I love the Dover sole grenobloise.

Emily Sundberg's avatar

The London suggestions in this comment section have been stacking up over the last few weeks

MRAC's avatar

EMILY IN LONDON

MRAC's avatar

When did you go last? It was EPIC when King + Corbin were involved. Since their departure it’s nosedived

Amber Nelson's avatar

2013, so a little while back

MRAC's avatar

The golden era for sure! I’m not sure if I’d recommend going back if you’re ever in town again — preserve those memories of the halcyon days of The Wolesley!!

Eva Ducruezet's avatar

hard agree - it's def gone downhill. I use to love the breakfast there but my last couple visits have been disappointing. food was bland and service was questionable

MRAC's avatar

It’s sad! Used to be *the spot* for a fancy brekkie

Charles Kowalczyk's avatar

Absolute banger interview. Great stuff

Fern Diaz's avatar

I know two (unrelated) gals who left Hoffman a few days in! Apparently there’s a spa nearby (or multiple?) and they both just did that for the duration of the trip.

Emily Sundberg's avatar

Whoa. Now I need to go to that spa and find out if the Hoffman escapees are a pattern

Natalie's avatar

Was dying to hear David’s response, so, thank you. And you made my entire day with this Culture news!!!!

Emily Sundberg's avatar

Culture makes New York summers so much better

Natalie's avatar

& it feels more rare for new places to pop up in gramercy!
