Happy Friday!

Spring is here! 🌸

  • The Drunken Canal is dead. After two years, New York’s favorite print newsletter has retired. The New York Times wrote about them, saying “A downtown New York crowd is pushing back against the homogenization of big social media.” New York Magazine said they were the publication Dimes Square deserved. Vanity Fair said they were the toast of the pandemic. But now, the doors have shut. What’s next? A project called Byline, co-created by Gutes Guterman (who co-founded The Drunken Canal).

I texted Gutes last night to get some exclusive quotes on how she’s feeling, because I LOVE you all, my readers:

“The Drunken Canal was my greatest work, as an artist. It was an art project where Media was the Medium. I made what felt like the whole word dance around in pleasure and pain.

I look forward to my new endeavor, which unlike The Drunken Canal, is built to last. To make meaningful change, as opposed to being some sort of quasi-revolutionary. Byline will change the way writers are cared for and in turn, care about their work.”
