Stop roasting Whitney Wolfe 🐝
You're ignoring the reality of the current state of online dating.
Good morning everyone. Hope you’re all having an amazing Friday so far.
Today’s letter includes:
Our next Guest Lecture will be with Eliana Gil Rodriguez. Rodriguez started out working for American Apparel in Montreal (at the age of 15!) and moved to LA with the company as a designer. She went on to start her own eponymous brand, Gil Rodriguez, focused on ethically sourced fabrics to make elevated basics (a category which is exploding right now). Paid readers can ask questions about everything from labor and manufacturing practices, to startup finance and organic growth, to fast fashion. If you’d like to see how these interviews work, you can read past Guest Lectures with a16z’s David Ulevitch and Régime des Fleurs’ Alia Raza.

NEWS:
If you can’t get into Carbone, just go to Cafe Spaghetti! At least that’s what The Times says to do.
In millions of fridges across the country, there is an Ozempic pen. This Town and Country oral history of the drug is probably the most entertaining, accurate story I’ve read about the drug. In fact, I think Town and Country has become a top-three read for me recently (I just paid for a sub, the writers are so poignant and fun). As far as where the trend started, all roads point to Kim in that Marilyn dress at the Met Gala. From there, it was the wild west. Some standout quotes from this story:
“The Upper East Side’s favorite game show is Who’s on Ozempic?”
“WeightWatchers worked much better 20–30 years ago, when we lived in a very different food landscape.”
“I’m on it. My staff is on it. I assume everyone in New York is on it at this point.”
“People are drinking less socially, which is partially due to Ozempic, which makes alcohol less appealing. I’m seeing more THC gummies or microdose psilocybin on nights out.”
So that Whitney Wolfe clip… People are grilling her for saying that in the future our AI’s will date each other but if you're roasting her… you're ignoring how dating is already mediated through all these algorithms and little formats and prompts and memes into which we fit our personalities. She could’ve expressed it better (her messaging sounded creepy) but there’s truth in what she’s saying.
Warby Parker’s revenue jumped 16% year over year to $200mm in Q1. You know what? I have some sick glasses Warby sent me, and I want some more! They’re great. Warby Parker’s main growth driver was its continued store openings, with eight new locations during the quarter and a total of 40 anticipated for 2024. Those eclipse glasses were pretty cool too. That strategy has helped them keep customer acquisition costs low – the main concern of most of the consumer founders I speak to (heard this from two who co-founded public companies yesterday).
Sam Bankman-Fried had a reporter buy him Wheat Thins in prison.
