Coming around to horror films, in time for Halloween. By Teddy Kim
Stay Tuned is a Feed Me guest column about film and entertainment, written by Teddy Kim. Today, he wrote about getting over his fear of horror movies, and a menu of scary movies for beginners.
For the longest time, I wanted nothing to do with horror movies. As a kid, I would have these night terrors that woke me up at 3 a.m. every night and I didn’t need anything else to feed my fears about what could be creeping around the house at that ungodly hour. Supernatural horror, especially, was a no-go for me. Thankfully, the terrors subsided as the years mounted, perhaps a reflection that as we get older it’s the more prosaic anxieties that loom large in our lives.
I finally came around to horror films when, in college, I confronted the fact that, in the course of trying to watch every great film, I was going to have to watch some from that genre. Since then, although I still avoid gore, I’ve come to appreciate some of the thrills and chills, the camaraderie of the dark theater, and the unnerving experience of watching a scary movie at night by yourself and wincing at every creak.
If you enjoyed our Monday Scaries series and are looking for more, or if you’re just trying to get into the mood for Halloween, here are a few movies that I’ve come to not loathe, but still fear.
🩸 = especially gory from what I remember
Classic must-watch
The Shining (1980)
The Exorcist (1973) - probably my favorite since I started watching horror 🩸
Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
Psycho (1960)
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
The Sixth Sense (1999) - I will never forgive The Lonely Island for spoiling this movie for me
Alien (1979)
Modern masterpieces
The Terror S1 (2018) - not that scary but more of a psychological thriller
Hereditary (2018) - very scary and upsetting but a hell of a movie
