New York has bad department stores

Even though there are more millionaires here than ever.

Good morning I’m back.

Things that are better about Paris:

  • Nobody walks around on their phone

  • Wine is so cheap

  • No lines at restaurants

  • My new friends at Le Doyenne that let me sleep at the farm

  • Department stores (the magnificent retail displays, the employees who don’t look like they want to kill themselves, the expansiveness, the variety)

  • Nobody has their phone out at dinner

  • Strawberries

  • People dress better

  • Cigarettes

  • Outdoor seating where everyone’s chairs are facing the street as if the world is a stadium

  • Trains have those fuzzy seats

EXPANDING on the department store thing. I think the department stores in New York are worse because of American habits:

  1. People like things immediately in the US (Amazon, takeout, 24 hour customer service) and that means they don’t have time to wander and discover and get dressed and walk through 6 floors of a department store. They want the shoes on their doorstep tonight.

  2. People like things that everyone else has in the US, we’re reliant on abiding my trends — the Jacquemus bag, the Charlotte Tilbury lip liner, the Gucci loafers. None of these things require shopping. It requires finding the right size and color, and filling in your credit card information.
