One time a friend asked me to meet them at Gold Bar. I showed up solo and the bouncer told me I need to buy a bottle to get in. I said, "so you are saying, you want me to buy a bottle of alcohol just for myself and then drink it? If I do that, I become your problem." He laughed and just waved me in.

There truly will never be anything like the old-school clubs of NYC. Just, nothing.

Also, I hope that you and Tina Brown somehow end up doing something, Or at least TB does a Guest Lecture.

You must wrangle something to do with her. There is no more refreshing voice or an equal parts intellectual thinker and long lens funny.

ITTTA, but one caveat, old school as in before the scourge of bottle service. Think Danceteria, Area, Save The Robots, Paradise Garage, Lime Light and Palladium. And the Holy Grail - Studio 54.

Was at the Geese show last night and can confirm it very much felt like the Strokes at Hammerstein in 2003. No Drew Barrymore or David Cross (as far as I could see) in the crowd last night tho.

You should go tonight. The kids were moshing, crowd surfing, holding up lighters (!!!) for the encore. They're the real deal.

Kinda, really upsetting and disgusting that those kids thought it was cool to spend that on their parents cc's. You guys have nothing on us '80's high schoolers hanging at Studio, Xenon's, Limelight and Palladium...

Someone who went to the Bobby Kennedy III MAHA party made a point to say to me today that there were a lot of women over 50 with very heavy makeup and plastic surgery. The price of looking like that does seem to be the deciding factor

I'm not saying it doesn't have academic rigor (I have many smart friends who went there), but one drive through campus (which is a regular thing if you live downtown since the peninsula is small and the campus and student housing is spread throughout) is a clear marker - lots of these kids have money and a penchant to play. Driving (new!) Range Rovers, G-Wagons, etc. Lots of northeast kids (Greenwich, etc) coming here for school. You have the beach, King Street full of packed bars, great houses to live in, sunny year round, it's just, very much...a vibe. My wife and I agreed there is no way we would let our son go there - they just seem like they're having too much goddamn fun.

CofC was so fun back in my day and every time I visit now the kids seem richer and richer.. I thought it might be on that list but it’s never had the best academic rep. The architecture, food (in large part thanks to you brooks!) and beaches make it such a unique college experience

The NYC HS club scene of the 2010s doesn't sound THAT different from that of the 80s or the 90s, except a lot more emphasis on money. 40 years ago we were all armed with fake ID and spending our nights at Peppermint Lounge, Danceteria, Tunnel, CBGB, the Ritz, Limelight, Nell's (terrifying that i can't remember why I walked into a room, but can remember all the clubs I liked at 15). But anyway, a lot of getting dressed up, drinking, mild drug use, hook ups, lying to parents, and getting into dodgy situations after French fries and Marlboro lights at Florent at 4 in the morning because you didn't actually want to go home with the older guy (28) who'd been buying you drinks all night (there was no Uber to whisk you home then). It makes me very sad that apparently today's high school kids are not hooking up, not partying, not extricating themselves from dodgy situations... I don't know. At least my friend's kids aren't. I hope some are.

Did you ever go to an after-hours club called Save the Robots? I’ve heard legends…

Elaine's avatar

Yes, in college, I lived on 1st and 12th, and that was sometimes the last stop of the night (other favorites of that era were the Pyramid Lounge and the dive bar 7B, which unlike anywhere else in this thread, is STILL EXACTLY the same. Robots was crazy - everyone from all the hero(ines) of the drag scene, to skins who looked like they might kill you if you looked at them funny, to investment bankers taking a walk on the wild side. It's so hard for me to say because i was young then and that's everything, but I really feel like the city had such a different energy back then.

Wow. You just painted a seriously epic picture of the place. My dad told me that when he was in college in dc they would sometimes get on the train up to NYC to afterparty at save the robots. And that it closed at 2pm???

Geeeeeeeese - NYC private school kids with their heads screwed on straight and ridiculous amount of talent. Their shows just get better and better. Known the bass player since he was a wee lad and so proud (yes mom level). Agree re age range, it's a hometown show even though the hometown is the capital of the world - also being in your 50's doesn't mean you have to give up loving impeccable live music.

Somehow I got into an album release party at the Andrew WK club Santos Party House when I was like 16, Action Bronson showed up (shirtless) and performed, there were inflatable sex dolls falling from the sky like balloons, it was, to this day, the wildest party I’ve been to.
