Good afternoon, everyone.

It was fun seeing some of you this morning at Substack’s media summit. I spoke to my friend Dylan about what it’s been like to build TBPN over the last year. Hopefully we can all kick it again soon.

Last night I got dinner at Balthazar with some friends. I recommend ordering their spring pea ravioli before it leaves the menu.

Today’s newsletter includes: L.A. Material is expanding their newsroom, Peter Rahal on how David Protein’s new ice cream ended up on Bella Hadid’s yacht, another bathhouse comes to Greenwich Village, and the highs and lows of Glossier’s new hoodie launch.

A Staten Island Ferry Bar Desire Unquenched

NYCDOT wants you to think you can buy a beer on the Staten Island Ferry. A Feed Me investigation by our Anonymous Transit Expert found that’s not always true. The Anonymous Transit Expert has to stay anonymous because he has a Real Job in a Real Office.

In the midst of New York’s first heat wave of the year, I snuck away from my desk at 5:30 on Tuesday on what should have been an easy assignment: purchase and enjoy one (1) beer on the Staten Island Ferry. I’d taken note of a New York Times article from late March that proclaimed the Staten Island Ferry bar open again for the first time since 2019, ending a seven-year dry spell—precipitated by a lapsed vendor contract and exacerbated by the Covid pandemic—and undoing one of the last remnants of 2020-induced disruption left in the transit system. After the Times ran with the Department of Transportation’s confident proclamation, replete with interviews with the poet laureate of Staten Island, Marguerite Maria Rivas, and employees of the beverage distributor that made it happen, I was genuinely excited to relax and take in the harbor on a fast and free sunset booze cruise.
