Good morning, everyone.

Yesterday, at the age of 31, I braved the elements in an Arc’teryx jacket for the first time. I’d been tracking the weather in Orkney while I was in Edinburgh a few days ago, and while it looked mild by Scotland standards, I knew I’d be exploring the windy cliffs, which can become wet and cold because of the maritime climate. I went to an outdoor store called Tiso in Edinburgh where I caved and bought a black Arc’teryx Beta Jacket, which I rolled up and stuck in my suitcase. My question is, how did I live this long not knowing how well these jackets worked? Outside of my jacket, hail beat against the wet grass and wind blew against the cliffs, but inside of my jacket, under my cashmere sweater, I was not only warm but dry.

This is a letter of recommendation (un-paid, un-affiliate linked) to invest in the technology that is Arc’teryx. And an apology to my husband who offered me his from the closet three times as I walked out the door to head to JFK last Friday. And an admission that I discovered for myself what many of you already know: Outdoor stores are goated and it’s an outright tragedy that the REI on Houston is closing.

Today’s newsletter includes: Rockaway Beach is getting a members’ club, W’s latest hire spent 11 years at Condé Nast, shorting Surf Lodge, and the newsletters replacing HGTV.
